  Accounting:

By studying Accounting, one is able to study and record the financial history of a business. This involves recording all cash and credit transactions in appropriate journals and then posting this information to the various ledgers. Once this has been done, financial statements reflecting the profit or loss made can be drawn up. The results are then analyzed and compared to results in previous years. This detailed analysis assists the owner of a business in managing his firm more effectively. Pupils at Fourways High follow the syllabus prescribed by the Gauteng Department of Education.

  Multimedia:

This is a compulsory subject to the Grade 8 and 9's. Pupils attend at least 1 lesson a week. During these periods they are introduced to every facet of the computer, from the hardware to the various types of software. During their Grade 8-year, pupils are taught various topics. They begin with a basic run-down of the components of a computer.

By the end of grade 9, they should be able to use Word, Excel and PowerPoint, as well as research using the Internet. We use cross-curriculum projects to teach these skills.   Geography:

Geography is about real places where real people live, work and go to school. Geography looks at many things to do with people and places, mountains, volcanoes, earthquakes, floods, space travel, other countries, farms, businesses, mines, transport, communication; the list goes on. Geography looks at topics that are interesting and very relevant to show us how our world works today. Studying Geography will help students to be more aware of their surroundings, to make decisions and to solve problems. They will have the opportunity to think about our world and the problems that affect our lives in Southern Africa. They will learn about the way in which land is shaped by natural forces and how this affects people living in towns and the countryside. Skills such as mapping, drawing graphs and field work will help students to make sense of Geography and the world around us. Geography is such a wide-ranging subject that it often , the ability to read maps and aerial photographs and basic calculations are taught in standard eight only and during standard nine and ten, students are shown how to interpret maps - namely deducting, evaluating, making inferences and recognising interrelationships. In the final matric examination pupils are evaluated on the theory taught in matric and the map work completed in grades 10-12. It is therefore vital that pupils who wish to take Geography in matric select the subject from grade 10.

  Physical science:

Pupils and the community at large often believe that physical science is an academically elite subject, which automatically establishes in the minds of people that only the very brilliant or exceptionally high IQ pupils choose physical science at school. However, this is a misconception.

Physical science is a subject that allows one to think logically and to apply the principles of physics or chemistry in everyday life situations. The science department at Fourways High School hopes to achieve some degree of success with regards to this so that this will enable the science pupils to make wise decisions for future life skills and work situation. Physical science is taught with the aim of making pupils aware of applying this work in the technical world, health sciences and industry at large. Pupils are exposed to situations that occur at industrial level from subject matter. A very important aspect of physical science is the ability to extend the creative nature of a pupil. Thus pupils are given the opportunity to build or create modules (projects) that are based on sound scientific principles. Creativity and originality are key factors that enhance the mark allocation for a project. We hope that such an experience extends the pupil to beyond the confines of science in the classroom and makes one realise the application of science in this world. In South Africa, there is a dire need for skilled technicians and scientists. We at Fourways hope that through our teaching we can bring about a change to the science and technology of our country. Any child wishing to pursue a career in the trade field needs to have a physical science background which is applied in trade.
